It all started with a cup of tea.Last year I watched Matt Cutts on a TED Talk (Try Something New for 30 Days) and felt inspired. This was something that I could do to try new things and enrich my life.
So I enriched it with tea. I've never been a tea drinker, in fact, I found the stuff vile. Yet I felt so isolated from the tea drinking brotherhood and I wanted in. So I decided to acquire the taste by drinking 4 cups of tea each day. And you know what? It did the trick. Now I love it. So why stop there? Last summer I did a cycling challenge, vowing to do 35km per day for 3 weeks. Sore seat aside, I had some amazing rides and discovered so much more of Edinburgh. I finished the challenge rather unceremoniously by cycling to and from ASDA. I've come to love challenges. From curry-training to eventually eat a vindaloo, to recording the number of sneezes I do every day, to running a marathon. Each one has been interesting or entertaining in its own right. |
Alastair Humphrey's 'Night of Adventure'In June 2012 I attended Alastair Humphrey's 'Night of Adventure' in Edinburgh.
20 speakers, each with 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide telling us about their wacky, harebrained schemes to challenge themselves and push the boundaries. All their challenges were entirely different (skateboarding across Australia, anyone?) but they all had one thing in common - a brilliant adventure, something learnt and a fantastic story to tell. Here I learnt about 'Hope & Homes for Children', Mr. Humphrey's chosen charity. A plan was hatched. I was going to organise my haphazard fads into a 12-month, 360-day, action-packed series of 30 Day challenges to raise money and hopefully learn a little something about myself along the way. |
